In the beginning, God said “Let there be Light.” And it was good. (Gen1:3-4) The Apostle John said, “the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”(Jn.2:5)
God spoke light into creation. Before God opened His mouth there was no light - and it was not good. When God chose to create light, He did not form it with His hands, He did not sit down with pen and paper, He simply spoke - and light appeared.
…And it was Good.
Light is not the opposite of dark. To say so would be to say they have some level of equality. Perhaps that light and dark are equal opposing forces. In reality, dark is the absence of light. But when light arrives, darkness flees. Darkness cannot overcome the light. If I stepped into a dark room and flipped on a light, there is no great battle as the dark tries to oppose the light. The darkness simply disappears as fast as the light arrives - at light-speed!
“Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.””(Jn 8:12) Jesus is, was, and always will be the Greatest, purest, brightest, Light that the World has ever known. In His Light we can see the Way, the Truth and the Life. In Jesus’ Light darkness does not cloud our vision and judgment. The darkness of sin MUST flee when Jesus arrives. In the light of the Messiah, we find life, and that life is abundant life - devoid of darkness. Jesus is the Light that “shines into the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
…And it was Good.
Jesus the turns the tables. In Matthew 5, “You are the Light of the World…let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.” (Vs.14,16). Jesus, the Promised Messiah, who has all the authority of Heaven and Earth, the Light of the World sent to cast out the darkness of sin, now says that YOU AND I are the light of the world? WE are supposed to shine into the darkness by our words and actions so that others will experience the goodness of God and rejoice in His Name! Jesus spoke: YOU are the Light of the World!
…And it was Good.
Sunday night marks the beginning of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. Apart of the amazing purposes and design of the menorah used in the tabernacle, it is truly humbling and powerful to consider this 8 day celebration of Light through the lenses of Kingdom citizenship and intimacy with Our Father through Jesus Messiah.
We’re not Jewish but this year we have been looking into the great feasts of the Jewish people to better understand who Jesus was and the culture he came from. It has been an amazing and fun opportunity to worship and celebrate the festivals and meals that our Lord and Savior would have celebrated. We’ll keep you posted!
